Why Invisalign® and Teenage Teeth are Besties

Why wait until adulthood to consider Invisalign? The teenage years are fast becoming the most popular period for this revolutionary treatment. Today’s post is about debunking some of the popular myths surrounding teenagers and Invisalign®. Let’s take a look at the common hear-say and reveal the truth!

Invisalign® is unsuitable for the early stages of secondary teeth

Some critics will argue that teenagers need to wait until they are older when their adult teeth and jaw are fully developed. On the contrary however, for these younger patients there could not be a better time for the Invisalign® treatment.

Interestingly, Invisalign® is also applied to children once they have lost their baby teeth. Children can start treatment as early as twelve years’ old. Studies show that under-18 patients produce results 50% faster than traditional braces, typically in 12 to 18 months. Younger teeth are simply more malleable and flexible therefore this speeds up the straightening process.

Any discussions surrounding ‘the right age’ for Invisalign® have nothing to do with the physical development of the teeth. It’s actually a matter of compliance, meaning, if the patient is responsible and mature enough to have Invisalign® installed. For example, if you are the parent of a 12 year old that is ready for the step then they should not be restricted by their age. As long as the teenage patient is prepared to follow the correct procedure, then there is no reason to delay becoming a happy Invisalign® user!

Invisalign® is aesthetically invasive for young people

Invisalign® is a breakthrough in orthodontics because the aligners are fully transparent. They do not undermine the appearance of a teenager in any way. In fact, they are becoming the latest trend for anyone wanting a straight set of teeth. Traditional braces are now viewed as unfashionable and undesirable because of their metal features. The tabloids frequently comment on the cool celebrities sporting Invisalign® such as Zendaya, Prince Harry, and Zac Efron!

Invisalign® will disrupt the routine of an active teenager

Many parents show concern about how Invisalign® will affect the daily activities of their children. For example, I have had parents mention the fear that the aligners will be taken out during the day and that their children will lose them. However, what we see with our younger patients is that they are committed to their straightening regime, especially when it comes to sports. It’s also worth mentioning that Invisalign® also requires fewer visits to the dentist than the traditional option of braces. In the past, metal braces often required check-ups every 7 to 10 days at certain stages. With Invisalign® at the most, teenagers will only have to commit to every 2-3 months visit.

Invisalign® will be uncomfortable for a teenager to wear

Uh, not at all. These aligners are super comfortable - they are simply plastic trays that are customised to the teenager’s mouth and even trimmed down to the gum line so that they fit perfectly. There are no brackets or wires so there is no chance of irritation of cuts in the mouth. You will see that half the time, patients forget that they are even wearing them.

Invisalign® is impossible with special needs teenagers

We do our utmost to support our patients with learning difficulties or disorders. However in most cases, we find that the convenience and flexibility of the Invisalign® procedure allows teenagers of all abilities to enjoy the benefits. In particular, research has shown that young individuals with autism spectrum disorder respond well to aligners. The routine aspect of wearing aligners is something that these wonderful patients enjoy and they often follow the daily steps with the utmost discipline and dedication.

Invisalign® can affect a teenager’s confidence

Every person is different, yes that is true, but working with many Generation Z patients, I have noticed a change. This latest generation of teenagers are super disciplined, curious and adaptable to new circumstances. They are also more conscious and interested about self-care and the idea of looking after yourself from a younger age. So I can assure you that most younger Invisalign® users are mature and educated enough to take the decision on a positive note.

Invisalign® will have germs lying around in the mouth

Critics may attack back and say that braces have less residue than a fitted Invisalign tray. On the contrary! It has been scientifically proven that aligners are easily cleaned and maintained and lingering substances are detected instantly.

Invisalign® cannot deal with complicated orthodontic cases

This is a common misconception: that the mechanics of Invisalign® cannot treat complex cases such as overbites, underbites or open bites. Let me tell you though that Invisalign® has the power to correct extreme cases such as cross bites and missing teeth. The reality is, more complex issues can be dealt with 100%.
